It is particularly suitable for recording animal sounds such as birds, as well as nature in the field. It is also ideal for sports, meditation, security monitoring, and any application that requires a true “sound lens”.
It uses the basic principles of a parabola to concentrate sound into a single focal point. This allows for physical (not electronic) amplification, avoiding hiss — the unwanted noise similar to a continuous “s” sound that can occur when over-amplifying with recording devices.
Its efficiency in sound amplification and directionality is also achieved through its specific design. A protective cap ensures that the microphone captures only the sounds reflected by the parabola from the targeted source.

It records in stereo, but not the ambient stereo you may be used to, nor what is typically expected from directional microphones.
This is focused stereo. The microphone capsules are separated by a central divider, splitting the parabolic dish into left and right channels.
For example, if you are recording two birds interacting side by side, you will be able to subtly separate them across each channel.
It is very intuitive, simply point and listen.
It is also highly practical, as it is an all-in-one system. You can mount your audio recorder directly onto the microphone using a ball head.
This allows you to monitor your recording easily without taking your eyes off the subject.

At Crake Sound, we use TRS cables (3.5 mm minijack), as they provide at least double the battery life compared to XLR cables. They are also lightweight and allow for an easy stereo setup.
Your recorder must therefore have a TRS (3.5 mm minijack) input and provide Plug-In Power (PIP). Some cameras also include these features, allowing you to connect your parabolic microphone directly.
